Hey peeps!

It’s really good when self published authors like me receive reviews and I’m especially pleased when I’m compared to other authors in my genre.

Julie Nicholls has done it again! In Blood Ties, we meet Keagen, a product of Solgen Laboratories, taken in trade from his addict father at the age of twelve. Programmed by Dr. Keller with super intelligence and a killer instinct, he is perfection in his design.

Gabriel, another product of Solgen Labs, also courtesy of Dr. Keller, is Keagen’s target. A wolf shifter, he escapes after years of physical testing and abuse, settling in a small town, seeking refuge. Meeting Lyssa, also a shifter, he feels an instant attraction and their relationship grows stronger.

Keagen makes his appearance and the sparks fly. There is action, intrigue, deception, and lots of hot romance. The characters come alive through Ms. Nicholls writing and, as with her other books, they are memorable. As I read, thoughts of the writing of Sherrilyn Kenyon came to mind. This book is that good.

Blood Ties is a great start to a promising trilogy featuring an intriguing cast of genetically engineered humans and lycans. This book has it all–science fiction, fantasy, action, adventure, and erotic sex scenes.

One of the elements in this book I found most enjoyable was the relationship that grew between Keagen and Gabriel. It reminded me of some of the “buddy movies” of the past–Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour, etc. Keagen, the genetically enhanced hunter, often shows a humorous side that Gabriel, a lyca and formerly Keagen’s prey, eventually comes to appreciate. Lyssa, Gabriel’s love interest and also a lycan, is sweet but no slouch when threatened. I also loved the minor character Tiny; he’s a real scene-stealer!

I’ll be impatiently waiting for the follow up to learn more about Ghost, Keagen’s female counterpart. She’s got a top secret ability most women would love to have. No, I’m not going to tell you what it is. No spoilers from me.

Bottom line–I recommend this book. I was given an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review, but if I hadn’t, I would have purchased it with no regrets.
