Sabe frowned, and hoped to learn of the joke between Kai and Beros as Kai chuckled.
Kai stood up, and dusting off his pants, scanned the camp. “Where will I sleep?”
“With me.” Sabe grinned and left the warmth of his blanket, and Nissa’s body, to stand by his side. He slapped his shoulder, “But don’t worry, you’ll not be getting a goodnight kiss.”
Everyone laughed as Kai shoved at his friend. “I’m pleased to be respected among my friends.” Kai grinned wide. “You’ll do as your king commands; else I’ll have you flogged.”
Laughter rang around the fire once more, as the banter between Sabe and Kai continued, raising their spirits. The somber mood over the last few weeks had lingered for too long. Too many warriors fell to their death, and it was time to bring happier times forward.
“Until the morning then.” Kai pulled at Sabe’s arm as he attempted to say goodnight to Nissa, “Come on. I need my boots removing!” He chortled.
They’d brought only four tents. Nissa and Kiera occupied one, Sabe and Kai the other, while Jace, Nazar, Beros, and Maika used the others. The warriors often slept under the stars, and had makeshift shelters using canvas and the surrounding trees.
Kai removed his shirt, just as Sabe entered the dwelling.
Grinning at the claw marks on Kai’s back, Sabe couldn’t resist a tease, “I’m glad Nissa can’t see what her queen does in the bedroom. I’d be ripped to shreds!”
Kai grinned and turned to face his friend, showing the rest of his freshly scarred body.
Sabe grimaced with a hiss. “Is this a new game you’re engaging in?”
Frowning, Kai ran his fingertips over the wounds. The memories of his night with Eloise seemed distant. His recollection of the passionate manner in which his wife caused him harm faded quickly.
“This isn’t usual; I have no idea what made Eloise so…”
Sabe leaned in for a closer inspection and winced. “Imagine what damage she would have caused if you’d been gone for a week!”
They laughed and made ready for their beds. Kai was still tired, despite not rising until the afternoon.
Groaning as he lay back, he rested his arms behind his head. He turned to his friend with concerned thoughts. “Will you be alright tomorrow?”
“Of course, why wouldn’t I be?”
“It’s been a few years since… well, after what Tigan attempted. I’m just worried you might not be able to resist the temptation to kill him.”
The thought had crossed Sabe’s mind, and he knew Kiera would be equally satisfied if he did. “He deserves it, but you can count on me. I’ll do whatever you command.”
Lifting his head off the makeshift bed, Kai turned to his friend. “I’ll give no commands.” He scowled, “Nothing has altered between us, despite my title.”
He puffed out as he lay down. He never asked to be king, if he’d had his way, he and Eloise would have remained at Blackhill.
“I’ve always followed your lead, and I’ll continue. We’ll watch how it unfolds and you can decide the best course of action. Agreed?”
Kai sighed, “Agreed.”
“We’re settled then. Now unless you want me to tuck you in and kiss you goodnight, go to sleep.”
Sabe ducked as Kai’s boot flew through the air.
