Smoke and flames billowed around the fallen angel, Samyaza, as he disappeared under the earth. Clinging onto him, Kai gasped for air as the choking fumes filled his lungs, but he wasn’t about to release his captive. For what seemed like an eternity, they tumbled back to the depths of hell, both fighting along the way. Samyaza tried to free himself from the half-angel. His arms flailed in frustration, and his temper grew when he realized that ridding himself of the warrior was fruitless. He screamed an ear-piercing howl when his feet connected with the charred ground.
“Scream all you want fallen, you’re staying here!” Kai struggled to keep his hold on the demon, and although he held him fast, he worried he’d be unable to fulfill his task and secure Samyaza to his prison. Cursing as he searched the chasm for the means to hold the prisoner, Kai’s attention drew to a shape hovering close by. Despite the orange glow from the burning tar pits, there remained darkened corners, and his eyes narrowed as a hooded figure emerged from the dimness.
“Here, bind him with this!”
A thick chain, seemingly glowing, flew towards Kai, and catching it with one hand, he hissed at the hot iron.
“Your skin will not burn if you hurry,” the concerned voice called.
Hurrying as instructed, Kai looped the chain around Samyaza’s thick neck. The ground suddenly trembled, and the sound of cracking rocks caused Kai to glance over his shoulder towards the noise. Grinning, he watched in amazement as a means to fasten Samyaza appeared before his eyes. Anchored into the stone, an iron ring, large enough to thread the chain through, glowed brightly. He stretched his hand towards the hoop, and growled. Reluctant to relinquish his hold on Samyaza to reach for the ring of iron, Kai cursed.
“Throw it to me!” The voice urged.
Narrowing his eyes, Kai could barely make out the features of the shrouded man, but had no option than to trust him, and threw him the chain.
“Quickly! I’m losing my hold.” Kai pulled on the cable, tightening it around Samyaza’s neck as he tried to free himself. “I cannot hold him!”
“Almost finished… just a moment longer!”
The expanse filled with a deafening roar when Samyaza felt the chain tighten. He tugged at the burning iron using all his strength, but it was useless. His wings spread wide and swiped at the cloaked figure.
“Watch out!” Kai could barely hold onto his quarry as Samyaza’s arms and wings thrashed.
“He is bound!” The figure pushed the hood of his cloak over his head to reveal golden hair, scraped away from his face and secured by a leather band. “You may release him, son.”
Kai paused for the briefest moment before loosening his hold on Samyaza. He quickly ducked to avoid his flaying wings before moving to stand by his father’s side.
They watched as the walls expanded, seemingly breaking apart before engulfing Samyaza. His cries diminished quickly as the stone reformed, sealing him away.
No words passed between Kai and Adram, his father. They studied one another, noting every detail of each other’s face.
