Deafening buzzing interrupts my thoughts and a searing pain in my temple follows. My hands instinctively cover my ears to blot out the painfully loud noise.
“What is it, Scarlett?” Dizelli asks.
Elyan turns to me. “Scarlett!”
My eyes snap shut as intense pain cuts through my head once more. If I knew what a migraine felt like, I’m sure this would be it. There’s so much noise. Buzzing…and screaming.
“What? Scarlett…what is wrong?” Elyan kicks the chair away as he jumps up.
Her name bursts through my lips in a scream.
The emotions rip through me. Pain, sadness, loneliness, anger, and rage. It’s a torrent of feelings I can’t escape. My heart is breaking from despair. Everything Maori is feeling at this moment is coming to me.
“Elyan, we need to go. NOW!”
The room is quiet as everyone stops what they’re doing. Elyan starts giving orders.
“Bring the horses! Warriors… gather your swords. Our dragons are under attack!”
The room erupts into activity once more.
“How do you know?” Earl Gwilim asks his son.
“Someone is attacking Maori. Scarlett feels her pain. We need to ride to the mountains, and quickly.”
“I will go with you, Elyan,” Mostyn says.
He doesn’t wait for Elyan to reply and instructs his father’s soldiers to have his horse saddled.
Dizelli wraps her arm around my shoulder. “Come on, Scarlett. We need to go. Can you stand up?”
“Yes. Just let me lean on you for support.”
She helps me out of the room and we wait outside for the horses. Torches are lit and the warriors are scurrying around under Elyan’s bark.
“Bring the fastest horse for Scarlett!” Elyan shouts at the groom. He runs over leading two horses. “Scarlett, you and I will lead. You must reach Maori before it’s too late.”
I can’t bear the thought of her suffering. The pain isn’t so bad and the noise is subsiding a little. Maybe she knows we’re coming and is saving her strength. I hope so. It’s going to take us a while to get to her no matter how fast the horses are.
“Scarlett, let me help you,” Elyan offers.
I hitch up my dress and he helps me onto the horse. Once I’m seated, he touches my hand.
“Can you still feel her?”
“Yes, but we should hurry, Elyan.”
“We will ride like the wind. The warriors will lead the way with torches and we will be on their tails.”
“Let us go! Our dragons need us!”
